How does one discipline a pet with compion?

Sometimes I wonder if showing anger is the right thing when the pet (my cat) isn't behaving at times. Eg. when he attacks/bites. It's scary. I don't touch him at this time but I might stomp my feet or chase him away or be really angry in my tone. I also feel bad while doing all this. How can I discipline with compion? Or am I being too critical of myself? Any tips/ideas very welcome. I just wonder if it is possible to deal with love during these moments, at the same time, sending the message that it is inappropriate and not reinforcing the behavior.
